Triangle Shirtwaist Fire (1911)
On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire tragically took the lives of 146 workers, most of them young women, in lower Manhattan. This devastating event led to the creation of critical worker protection laws, including New York’s Workers’ Compensation Law, fire safety codes, and wage and hour regulations—helping protect workers' rights and safety for generations.
Scholarships for Families of Injured Workers
Each year, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial Scholarship Fund continues this legacy by providing financial assistance to the children of workers who have been permanently disabled or lost their lives due to a workplace injury. These scholarships offer $6,000 per year in financial support for college-bound students whose families have been impacted by work-related accidents.
If your workers’ compensation case qualifies and your child is preparing to attend or currently enrolled in college, we encourage you to apply. You can learn more about the Triangle Fire and the scholarship at www.trianglememorial.org.

The workers' compensation system is based on a trade-off between employers and employees. Employees are entitled to receive prompt, effective medical treatment for on-the-job injuries or illnesses no matter who is at fault and, in return, are prevented from suing employers over those injuries.
In California, workers' compensation provides benefits for work-related injuries or illnesses, including medical care, temporary disability payments (around 2/3 of pre-tax wages), permanent disability benefits, supplemental job displacement benefits, and death benefits.
There are four types of workers' compensation benefits:
If you have questions about benefits, call 800-252-7031, option 1.
Benefits are authorized by Texas Labor Code (TLC) Sections 480.081-408.187
